"Any viable alternative therapy needs to address the problems that medicines do not. It also needs to work with the body so that it can be effective over the long term. And an effective alternative needs to stop all of the echoes, so that nothing bounces back to retrigger the problems. With that in mind, in addition to changing your diet (no more sodas and high-glycemic snack foods), you may want to explore the following protocol.

- Inhibit absorption of high-glycemic foods, without creating unwelcome responses in the intestinal tract (such as those experienced using metformin). This can be accomplished with herbs, including nopal cactus and Gymnema sylvestre.
- Naturally reverse insulin resistance, so less insulin is required, using konjac mannan (glucomannan from the Asian plant konjac), Cinnulin PF (a proprietary cinnamon extract developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture), chromium GTF, and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Repair beta cells in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas to optimize insulin production reserves as opposed to forcing the cells to dramatically overproduce as with glyburide, which leads to inevitable burnout. Useful supplements include Gymnema sylvestre and alpha-lipoic or R-lipoic acid.
- Lower blood sugar levels through proper diet and herbal supplementation with fenugreek extract, bitter melon (Momordica charantia), corosolic acid, and mulberry.
- Reduce stress. Remember, adrenaline suppresses the release of insulin.
- Protect organs and proteins from damage caused by higher than normal levels of sugar through a mixture of antioxidants and nutraceuticals, such as L-carnosine, acetyl-L-carnitine, dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE), coenzyme Q10 (coQ10), alpha-lipoic or R-lipoic acid, and benfotiamine (fat soluble vitamin B1).
- Protect organs from damage caused by higher than normal insulin levels by cleaning the blood with a blood-cleansing formula, proteolytic enzymes, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Does this protocol work? In 2006, I tested a trial formula containing nopal cactus, konjac mannan, Gymnema sylvestre, fenugreek extract, Cinnulin PF, Momordica charantia, and corosolic acid through an independent clinical trial. This herbal mix performed better than the prescription drug metformin. It produced an average 54-point drop in fasting blood sugar levels in six weeks; the lowest drop out of the fifty people tested was 42 points and the highest 106.
The bottom line for preventing and reversing diabetes is to do everything, and do it all at once. Since diabetes is not a straight-line, progressive disease, you need to stop every echo so that no aspect of the disease can reverberate and start the whole process moving downhill again. You need to stop it all, all at the same time, or it will all start again."
