Pioneering astronaut Buzz

November 25, 2014     Facts     No comments

Pioneering astronaut Buzz Aldrin made history as the second man to walk on the moon in 1969, just after Neil Armstrong during the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. More than four decades later, he wants NASA to set its sights on more ambitious destinations, far beyond the moon. Aldrin's target: Mars.

In his upcoming book, "Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration" (National Geographic Books), Buzz Aldrin argues that NASA should strive to put humans on the Red Planet by the mid-2030s and he lays out a plan for how to make it happen.

"Do not put NASA astronauts on the moon. They have other places to go," Aldrin said in the statement.

The book will apparently delve into Aldrin's past — including his service as an Air Force pilot during the Korean War, his initial rejection by NASA and his voyage to the moon — but also promises a critique of current space policy, examining the economic, political and technological viability of various options to explore the solar system.

In the 1980s, Aldrin adapted his expertise in orbital rendezvous to conceptualize the "Aldrin Mars Cycler," a spacecraft transportation system perpetually cycling between Earth and Mars that would make it possible to ferry astronauts back and forth to the Red Planet.

Aldrin has co-authored more than six books and the new one, which will hit stores on May 7, was co-written with space journalist Leonard David

Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2

November 25, 2014     Facts     No comments

Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2

Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) is a crewless, experimental rocket glider developed as part of the DARPA Falcon Project capable of flying at Mach 20/13,000 mph (21,000 km/h). It is testing technologies to provide the United States with the capability to strike any target in the world within one hour.

What is DARPA Falcon Project?
- The DARPA Falcon Project (Force Application and Launch from CONtinental United States) is a two-part joint project between the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the United States Air Force (USAF) and is part of Prompt Global Strike. One part of the program aims to develop a reusable, rapid-strike Hypersonic Weapon System (HWS), now retitled the Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle (HCV), and the other is for the development of a launch system capable of accelerating an HCV to cruise speeds, as well as launching small satellites into earth orbit. This two-part program was announced in 2003 and continued into 2006.

Photo: An artist's rendering of how the HTV-2 would look on flight.

Both the test flights have detected error's and have ended prematurely and have never (YET) made past testings....But, still dem mofoing 'Muricans ! >< =P

A Duck's Quack Doesn't Echo

August 14, 2014     Facts     No comments

A Duck's Quack Doesn't Echo

... It is a scientific myth that a duck's quack does not echo. Research has shown that a duck's quack does echo, but it is hard to hear because it is difficult to distinguish the quack from the echo.

There are several reasons why it is difficult to hear the echo:

Echoes are produced after loud noises. Ducks quack very softly,so the reflected sound is difficult to hear.

A reflecting surface is needed to hear an echo.Ducks tend not to live near reflecting surfaces such as cliff faces or buildings. An echo could be heard more readily if the duck quacked whilst flying past such as surface.

The toilet seat has acquired an unfair reputation

July 31, 2014     Facts     No comments

The toilet seat has acquired an unfair reputation as the dirtiest item in the average household. But scientists say there are far filthier places in our house, some of them where we least expect.

1) Kitchen Sink - Most think otherwise, but the kitchen might be the dirtiest place in your home. There are typically 500,000 bacteria per square inch in the sink drain alone.

2) Light Switch - Over the years your dirty hands contribute to 217 bacteria per square inch.

3) Door Knobs - As mentioned before, the hands are one of the dirtiest parts of the human body. Touching door knobs, which are also rarely every cleaned, transfers the germs and bacteria from everyone else who has touched that knob to your hand.

4) Computer Keyboard - Be sure to spray your keyboard with compressed air and wipe clean with a cloth and mild detergent. In a random study of 33 keyboards, four were health hazards.

5) Money - The Health Commissioner for New York found 135,000 bacteria from washing one bill and 126,000 from another. Make sure to thoroughly wash your hands any time you handle money directly.

6) Kitchen Sponge - The crevices in sponges make it difficult to disinfect and users are generally just transferring bacteria from one place to another. An easy remedy is to microwave the sponge for approximate 60 seconds, and it will improve odor too!

7) Refrigerator Handle - Since nobody ever cleans fridge handles the bacteria stays and has a lot of time to multiple and grow.

8) Mobile phone - It is so widely used that it contains more than 18 times the harmful germs that your toilet flush handle. This is available for your house telephone too.
You should clean and disinfect it often using antibacterial tissues.

9) TV Remote - Add to that the SARS, MRSA and VRE bacteria that is easily transferable by touching TV remotes. Hotels are notorious for this, so be sure to wrap it in plastic during your next stay.

Some amazing baby facts

July 30, 2014     Facts     No comments

Some amazing baby facts!

1. Men are the best at changing a baby's diaper. Men take just over a 1 minute while women can
take over 2 minutes to change a diaper. This will come in handy given that on average a baby will go through about 7,500 diapers per year.

2. About 1/4 of a baby's weight is accounted for by their head. Their brain accounts for about 10% of its total body weight. In adults the brain is only about 2% of their body weight. The males brain is slightly larger than that of the female brain at all stages of development. If you eat fish during pregnancy you can increase your baby's brain development as well as provide them with better communication skills.

3. Studies suggest that cesarean babies are more likely to have breathing difficulties, since they miss out important hormonal and physiological changes that occur during labor.

4. A baby has around 10,000 taste buds, which is far more than any adult has. Taste buds in babies can be found on their tongue, roof, sides and back of their mouth. These extra taste buds do disappear once they get older.

5. It is the father's sperm that decides the sex of your baby and it is determined at around 10 weeks after birth whether your baby is right-handed or left-handed.

6. Newborn babies urinate about every 20 minutes and once they reach 6 months they urinate every hour.

7. Babies are born with many super human powers such as a strong grasp that is able to hold their entire body weight with just their fingers and being able to swim and hold their breath under water immediately after being born. However the ability to swim and hold their breath under water quickly leaves.

8. If your child is overweight, they are up to 5 times more likely to have a heart attack by the age of 65. If your child is born in the month of May they are on average 200 grams heavier at birth then other babies. The heaviest baby born on record is just over 22 lb. and was born in 1955.

9. When babies are born they have 300 bones, but by adult they only have 206 boned in their body. This is due to the fact that some bones fuse together.

10. The only organ to develop fully before birth is the inner ear. It reaches its adult size by the middle of pregnancy. On the contrary babies are born with no kneecaps. Kneecaps don’t develop until about 6 months.

Did you know

July 29, 2014     Facts     No comments

Did you know

that open-mouth kissing allows for the transfer of hormones from a man to a woman? Mucus membranes in the mouth are permeable to hormones like testosterone, which a man can introduce into a woman's mouth through kissing. The testosterone then increases arousal in the woman, which leads to higher chances of sex!

9 Words Used By Women

July 15, 2014     Facts     No comments

9 Words Used By Women
.
1.) Fine : This is the word women use
to end an argument
when they are right and you need to
shut up.
.
2.) Five Minutes : If she is getting
dressed, this means a
half an hour. Five minutes is only five
minutes if you have
just been given five more minutes to
watch the game
before helping around the house.
.
3.) Nothing : This is the calm before
the storm.
This means something, and you should
be on your toes.
Arguments that begin with nothing
usually end in fine.
.
4.) Go Ahead : This is a dare, not
permission.
Don’t Do It!
.
5.) Loud Sigh : This is actually a word,
but is a non-verbal
statement often misunderstood by
men. A loud sigh means
she thinks you are an idiot and
wonders why she is wasting
her
time standing here and arguing with
you about nothing.
(Refer back to #3 for the meaning of
nothing.)
.
6.) That’s Okay : This is one of the
most dangerous
statements a woman can make to
a man. That’s okay means she wants to
think long and hard
before deciding how ‘n when you will
pay for your mistake.
.
7.) Thanks : A woman is thanking you,
do not question,or
Faint. Just say you’re welcome.
.
8.) Whatever : Is a women’s way of
saying F*** YOU!
.
9.) Don’t worry about it, I’ll do it:
Another dangerous
statement, meaning this is
something that a woman has told a
man to do several
times, but is now doing it herself.
This will later result in a man asking
‘What’s wrong?’ For
the woman’s response refer to
#3.Then you RUN!!!

How It Works: A Touchscreen That Knows You

Touchscreens treat all fleshy finger pads alike: Most detect a simple change in electrical current or in sound or light waves regardless of who is swiping. Researchers at Disney Research, Pittsburgh, have built a touchscreen that can discriminate between users. Every person’s body has its own bone density, muscle mass, blood volume, and water content. The device, called Touché, sends a series of harmless currents through a user’s body. Physiological differences produce differences in the body’s impedance of that current. Touché measures this unique capacitive signature. Scientists could apply capacitive fingerprinting to any touchscreen, or to other ubiquitous objects, such as doorknobs and furniture, turning the world into an interactive device. Touché is still in development, and plans for commercialization.
A) INDIUM TIN OXIDE
Capacitive sensors found in most existing touchscreens, track pads, OLED displays, and other electronics use indium tin oxide (ITO) as an electrode. The conductive material transmits an electric current to a user’s fingertips. ITO is also transparent, so light from the underlying LCD screen shines through.
B) SENSOR BOARD
The sensor board injects tiny electric currents into the ITO layer. When a user touches the screen (and thus the ITO layer), current flows from the sensor board through the ITO to the person’s body. The sensor on the board measures the body’s unique impedance at multiple frequencies. The most recent prototype takes up to a second to recalibrate for each new user. Once calibrated, it can recognize a familiar body in 500 milliseconds.
C) LCD PANEL An LCD provides the touchscreen's graphical interface.

The migration of giant gas planets such as Jupiter

July 02, 2014     Facts     No comments

The migration of giant gas planets such as Jupiter created a huge meteor storm that rocked our solar system around 3.9 billion years ago, according to a new study. The gravitation effects of the migrations flung meteors towards the inner solar system, where they hit objects including the Earth and Moon.

Did you know what astronauts eat in space?

April 29, 2014     Facts     No comments

It is not so easy being an
astronaut, especially if you’re a big
foodie. In this case, being in space
would be for you a living hell.
The food in space must be
nonperishable, because there’s no
opportunity to refrigerate it. Also,
it must be easy to eat, because
gravitation doesn’t let eating
gourmet dishes in space.
Astronauts can’t eat hot dishes,
because in case of floating it may
burn them. Moreover, they can’t
even eat bread because of the
crumbs, that may float around. So
considering these facts, it not
difficult to understand that the
food they take is not the most
delicious one.
It is either partially or completely
dehydrated to prevent them from
spoiling. Meats are exposed to
radiation before they are put
onboard the shuttle to give them a
longer shelf life. When the
astronaut is ready to eat the space
food, he can add water to
rehydrate the meal so that it will
be edible. Not an easy work to do.
It’s estimated that astronauts eat
70 % less than people on Earth. So
if you want to lose some weight,
hurry to acquire astronauts’ skills

Water actually does protect you from most bullets!

April 18, 2014     Facts     No comments

In most movies the superhero escapes certain death by simply jumping into water, but would that actually save him from someone shooting at him? The answer is yes and no.

It depends on the bullet, and how fast it goes. Paradoxically, the slower the bullet, the deeper it can go. The reason for this is because of the force at which it hits the water. If it hits hard enough, the bullet will shatter and become harmless, but if it is going slow enough it will continue through the water at speeds fast enough to penetrate human flesh.

Supersonic bullets, up to .50-caliber, disintegrate in less than three feet of water, while pistol rounds need up to eight feet to become non lethal. Shotguns slugs require even deeper water.

While these are the technical measurements, in most actual situations the bullet would enter the water at and angle, reducing the amount of water necessary to make it non-lethal.

Titanoboa Snake

April 18, 2014     Facts     No comments

Largest known snake Titanoboa (Titanoboa cerrejonensis) is the largest snake ever discovered at a length of about 49 feet long, weighing 2,500 pounds and measuring 1 meter in diameter. It lived approximately 60–58 million years ago, during the Paleocene epoch, a 10-million-year period immediately following the dinosaur extinction event. In 2009, the fossils of 28 individual T. cerrejonensis were found in the Cerrejón Formation of the coal mines of Cerrejón in La Guajira, Colombia. Prior to this discovery, few fossils of Paleocene-epoch vertebrates had been found in ancient tropical environments of South America. The snake was discovered on an expedition by a team of international scientists led by Jonathan Bloch, a University of Florida vertebrate paleontologist, and Carlos Jaramillo, a paleobotanist from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.

chewing Gum

April 18, 2014     Facts     No comments

Originally, chewing gum was made from tree sap but today's commercial brands are loaded with harmful ingredients and chemicals.

The modern day chewing gums are made of four major ingredients including synthetic rubber, plastic, sugar, and coloring (dye). Modern day gums are produced from synthetic polymers such as styrene-butadiene rubbers and polyvinyl acetate. The final product is composed of 60% sugar, 20% corn syrup, and only 20% actual gum material.

If you're chewing gum you are chewing rubber and plastic. Chewing gum is known as a harmless cultural tradition but it contains many properties that may be hazardous to our health.

Today's chewing gums and bubble gums are predominantly sugar by volume. Seventy to eighty percent of most gums on the market today are sheer vehicles for sugar, the number one drug on the planet. Just as cigarettes are a conveyor for the addictive drug "nicotine", so is gum for sugar

Japan Suicide Rate

April 18, 2014     Facts     No comments

Japan is a country notorious for it's high suicide rate. It’s estimated that almost 50 in 100,000 people commit suicide each year. However, that is comparatively small compared to Greenland’s 100 per 100,000 rate.

Another sobering difference between most countries and Greenland is that in the island, most people who commit suicide are teens and young adults.

In most other countries it’s elderly people who lead the statistic.

This is a relatively new development. The rate started growing since the 1970s. Although there is speculation that the reason for this high rate is alcoholism and poverty and incest rates, there are no firm studies that show why it’s such a big problem
